FAQs

Our kits are suitable for children 3+ years.  We always recommend adult supervision when children are playing with our kits.

Due to the presence of small parts/choking hazards our kits are not recommended for children under the age of 3

Our play dough will last for between 3-6 months providing it is stored in a cool, dark place and in the airtight tin provided.  If you store it in the fridge it can last even longer!  We recommend the fridge for people who live high humidity areas.

Play dough loves to be handled so the more you play with it the longer it will last.  Salt crystals may form on the surface (which is completely normal), if this occurs just give the dough a good knead and they will disappear again.  If your dough starts to dry out from age or being left out, give it a good knead and add a bit of water to help restore it again.

As our play dough is homemade it is free from artificial preservatives so please be sure to handle it regularly and store it correctly.

Sensory rice can be re-used many times and will last years providing it is clean and stored correctly.  We recommend storing it in the provided zip lock bag in a cool dark place.  The scent will fade over time (it is to be expected), however, you can always add your own at home afterwards to keep it smelling beautiful for years to come.

Yes, you can!  The ingredients found in our Sensory Fizz are nothing other than what you find in a typical bath bomb.  We use food grade products, which should not discolour skin, however, if it does it will easily fade with a wash or two.

If a child has an open cut this may cause irritation, if so, clean the area with clean water.  If irritation continues please cease play.

We use high quality food-grade ingredients in our Play Dough, Sensory Bases and Sensory Fizz. Food colouring and flavouring are mostly used to colour and scent our products, although in some cases dried flowers, herbs, cocoa and coffee are used.

For further information you can find the ingredient list in the description of each product.

We recommend washing or wiping clean your wooden tools and accessories immediately after use if there is play dough stuck on them – no one likes to scrub at old dried play dough!  You can use warm soapy water to clean them but do not soak them or put them in the dishwasher. Give a towel dry afterwards.

All our kits are handmade to order so there is some scope to customise your items.

We also love creating bespoke kits, so if you have an idea for a kit you would like we would be happy to hear your thoughts and we will do our best to accommodate.

Please in get in touch via the contact form with your request before placing your order and we will see what we can do.

The great thing about our kits is they are totally child-led. There is no right or wrong way to play with our kits.  Children have amazing imaginations and will come up with all sorts of ways to play themselves.  One day the kit may be a small world they have created and the next it may be ingredients for a cake! Sit back and enjoy watching what your child comes up with.

If your child is new to sensory play they may need some ideas modelled to them.  You can demonstrate play by scooping and transferring the materials, running your hands through the bases, setting up the pieces in different ways, talking about the different items and making up stories with the figurines.

Each of our kits come with an interesting fact sheet you can read with your child to inspire curiosity and spark their imagination.

You can either set the kit up for them as an invitation to play, set it up together or let them set it up themselves.

Here at HappiMess we are firm believers that a little mess is ‘Happiness’ for our little ones, but maybe not so much for the adults!

To help contain the mess we have purposely created our wooden boxes nice and deep to help contain all the contents inside.  It’s inevitable that some contents will escape, therefore, we recommend putting down a splash mat, old sheet or play mat to catch the mess.  This way you can easily pour the contents back in the box when you are finished. When playing with our play dough a placemat on the table or even the back of the lid on our wooden box works well!  Another great idea is to take it outside, all our bases are bio-degradable so if there are any spills you can rest assured knowing you are not leaving a footprint on the environment and there’s minimal clean up!
